A quirky Facebook bug, or Groundhog day for my iPhone?

Recently I have been experiencing some odd quirks on my Facebook app for iPhone. Initially, I had thought that the app had simply been updated with a change to it’s primary navigation moving from a side drawer system to a bar at bottom of the app. Below you can see the new experience. However, as I asked friends and coworkers what they thought – none seemed to have this change reflected in their application experience.

A mobile friendly marcsdesign

For those familiar with my site – you will notice that I recently made some significant changes. The previous site had been fairly unchanged since it’s last overhaul in 2009.  That design was a play on the idea of welcoming folks to look over my shoulder to provide an intimate look at what I was up to. I loved the playful feel as well as how it captured my roots as a traditional illustrator. However, it had become visually dated – and more important, was not optimized to display well for folks visiting on mobile devices.

Welcome to CNET’s first ever iPad App

Last week we launched the CNET iPad App to the Apple App store and we feel strongly that it is the most elegant, simple and intuitive way to consume CNET content yet. This was one of the first projects we embarked upon as I took over the reigns of CNET design.

I am looking to find an inspired & immensely talented Art Director for the CBS Interactive News & CNET group. This will be a key role on the team. The successful candidate will report to the Creative Director and lead a team of 4-6 designers. It will require both a conceptual and technical understanding of what is possible and how to push these boundaries.

Design guides are fantastic to follow – but sometimes rules are meant to be broken

The use of common navigational GUIs are key in showing users how to quickly learn your App.  Apple’s iPhone SDK and visual language are very well defined which makes it that much easier to create effective navigation / user flows.

A Functional use of New Media!

One of my favorite side projects is one that I have built to showcase the adventures I share with my son Brandon.  Obviously the content is more near and dear to me then any of my other work. However, it functions in a way that really makes the sharing part quick and easy. Thus what ultimately makes it so functional for me. I originally intended on keeping a more standard blog, but never could seem to find the time to write up lengthy post’s about our experiences.

Stop Action lego Surf

This is simply one of the neatest videos that I have seen online – This takes my personal passion of surfing and creates a unique story using the age old technique of Stop action animation. The result of what must have been a tedious amount of work, is simply awesome – both on the animation front, as well as the artists ability to capture the real feeling of surfing using the simplest of forms~

A Spring refresh for ZDNet

For years, I have long wanted to write about one of the major redesign efforts that take place within CBS interactive (previously CNET Networks). However, I am never able to really discuss the particulars of these types of projects while they are in the works, (and certainly can not share any of the design comps or product plans) Inevitably my small team moves on to another large project so quickly, that by the time I am able to do so, I have lost interest in taking that time needed to walk through what is a HUGE effort by multiple disciplines of teams within the larger Business unit.
